Running in the Rain
Despite us both still suffering slightly from our 13 mile run (I feel like a have a wooden leg & that I'm walking with a limp, even though it's not actually sore) we decided to head off out again as we were scheduled to do so. We had to stop off in my apartment first to get changed & by time we got there i did not want to leave. I could have easily have curled up into a ball on my bed & fell asleep until the morning. But thankfully Phil had more energy & will power than I & he got me motivated.
We set off in the car to Phoenix Park & even from the minute we drove out from my garage, the rain was pelting down. I looked at Phil & saw the delight on his face. He loves running in the rain. The only time i had ever encountered rain on a run was slight drizzle towards the end of a run a couple of times. I was about to find out why Phil was so happy.
By time we got to the park it was starting to get dark from the greyness of the clouds. All the cars going through the park had their head lights on & with the rain still beating down & bouncing off the roads, we wondered if there would be many people running as we were. Surely they would have to be mad as i was beginning to think we were.
We got to our starting point & parked up, ready for our run. I was looking forward to it. We chose to run the first 3 and a half miles of the Dublin Half Marathon course. Not long had we gotten out of the car & started our run & we were soaked through already. My muscles felt great with the coldness of the rain. I felt great.
Surprisingly there was a good few runners as mad as us running in the rain. Maybe they enjoyed it just as much as we did. Maybe they too are running the marathon next month & they too have to train no matter what. For whatever reason they were running for, whenever i passed a runner i looked at them with admiration. I felt they must be determined & have a passion for running to be out in the rain. I wondered if they thought the same about me & deciding they might. I felt proud of myself. I felt like a proper runner, and I suppose I am.
I hope after the marathon i continue with running. I feel like i have finally found something I love & something that makes me part of a secret world.

It's great to run with the rain on your back isn't it? I love it too, although, as a glasses wearer, it means I'm running blind, but still great fun.
Congrats on your 1/2 Mary as well from Sunday. What make were the new runners?
Last monday, I've been running in the rain in the Phoenix Park, one lap was enough, I had to go back to the city centre after.
Just came a across your BLOG on the preparation for the Marathon. I live in sunny California but was born and bred in Ireland. Not too many opportunities here in California to run in the rain but I couldn't agree more with your comments - it is indeed a great feeling. I'm planning to run in the Dublin Marathon in October, thinking of ways to prepare for the cold and the rain. Looking forward to it immensely.
