Running from Work
Last night Phil & I were back out running again after a night off on Wednesday. Phil actually wanted to run on Wednesday, but since we had already clocked up 20 miles between Sunday & Tuesday, I was tired & grumpy.
I had a night in with the girls for my night off & we got in a couple of bottles of wine. I haven't drunk wine for so long i felt pretty merry after one glass! And felt a little bit under the weather yesterday morning though i think that was mostly tiredness (again).
Now I didn't finish work until 5.30pm yesterday so our planned semi long run was debatable as we didn't want to end up running in the dark again, so Phil suggested running home from work. Blackrock to Cork Street is only 6 miles so I was happy enough with that.
Leaving most of our stuff at work & only taking our keys we set off.
We started from work & ran down the Rock Road, i found this to be very long & boring. Usually when I'm bored of running I zone out & go into a world of non-running thoughts, but on the very busy Rock Road I found it impossible to zone out with the sound of the heavy traffic all around. It wasn't that bad a road but it was different to running in the park in near silence. Plus we were only warming up while we were on that road so it probably felt worse than it was.
From the Rock Road we ran up Merrion Road, Pembroke Road & Upper & Lower Baggot Street. This was much better than the Rock Road in terms of noise (or maybe we had gotten used to the noise) & we were warmed up by now too. We did find that the closer we got into town though the more "people traffic" there was. There was a lot of dodging & weaving & I was quite concerned about my right knee as it was feeling fairly weak. I was worried that a sharp turn would have been too much pressure & it twist & buckle from underneath me. My biggest fear remember.
That fear stayed with me from Pembroke Street, through to Cuffe Street, Kevin Street & the Coombe, all the way home to Cork Street. For as long as I'm training for marathons, I don't think that fear will ever go.
We were delighted with our run though. We reached my apartment from work within 59 minutes. This included a few stops at traffic lights too. Plus as an added bonus, we got home quicker than we would if we'd have travelled home by train, bus , tram or car & we had our running finished earlier with a whole evening to relax.
Also, part of the route we ran was part of the last 6 miles of the Marathon course so we got a taste of what's to come. Only a tiny taste though.
Over all, I think we will be running home from work again :o)
